THE DEPARTMENT
University Housing Services is responsible for delivering a comprehensive student housing experience, which includes operations in residential life, business operations, facilities management, conference services, and information systems. The department has 50 full-time professional staff persons and is complemented by a student staff of approximately 150 students.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Clean & maintain residence halls restrooms/showers; clean & polish sinks; clean & disinfect commodes, clean & disinfect urinals; clean mirrors, dust; remove graffiti, clean partitions; sweep & mop quarry tile floors, terrazzo floors; clean & disinfect shower curtains, empty waste receptacles, check & fill dispensers and when needed, wash walls, ceilings, air-vents, and lockers. Relocate trash dumpsters for pick up.
- Clean & maintain exterior & interior stairwells, entryways, and landings; sweep, mop, dust, high dusting, remove gum, empty trash receptacles; clean cigarette urns; wash windows; dust window ledges; clean and polish handrails; vacuum entry mats; clean doors, clean doorjambs and remove graffiti.
- Clean and maintain residence hallways, lounges, laundry rooms, and offices, spot clean walls, dust, clean drinking fountains, mirrors, microwave, carpet-spotting, vacuum, gum removal, and empty trash. Shampoo carpet as directed or needed.
- Other expectations include safe handling and use of cleaning chemicals, safe use of equipment and hand tools, safeguarding buildings and/or equipment from unauthorized use, cooperating with hall staff and students in creating a safe & clean environment, working in teams/crews, stock custodial supplies and closets, initiate and complete work orders.
- Perform floor care in the residence hall, use of various floorcare equipment, i.e., vacuum, hot water extractor, wet vacuum, 175 RPM floor machine; sweeping, carpet extraction, stripping & scrubbing resilient tile and asphalt tile floors, carpet spotting, carpet repairs, mopping, spray buffing, applying floor finish and bonnet cleaning.
- Clean & maintain student rooms, including windows and vertical blinds; polish & clean furniture; wash walls, ceilings, light fixtures, doors, and doorjambs; vacuum and carpet spotting.
- Perform light maintenance in residence hall facilities such as lamp replacement, unclogging commodes/urinals, working with common hand tools, i.e., screwdrivers, pliers, hammers, and wrenches, service vacuum cleaners, i.e., replacing belts, empty vacuum bags, clean brushes, move/set-up furniture, tables, chairs, and miscellaneous furniture.
- Participate and serve various campus and department committees, and participate and attend staff meetings, retreats, and other training sessions. Assist with all emergency evacuation drills and emergencies if needed. Must be available for call-out in case of emergencies.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position; follow verbal and written instructions to ensure safety; operate and care for custodial equipment and supplies applicable to the position; use custodial systems such as those used to track work orders and two-way radios for communication; observe safety requirements and safe work practices and methods as required; perform work involving regular physical activity; and establish and maintain cooperative work relationships.
- Some positions may require the ability to move up to 50 pounds.
- Some positions may require possession of a valid California driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Valid California Driver’s license and insurance
- Thorough knowledge of the proper use and safety of cleaning chemicals, communication skills, i.e., ability to follow oral and written instructions, able to work independently and/or with team members and student workers.
- Must be able to use a computer to check email and input attendance.
- Knowledge and proper use of cleaning chemicals.
- Work well with students, staff, and college-age populations.
- Ability to operate various custodial equipment i.e., vacuum 175-rpm floor machine and self-contained carpet extractor.
- Ability to work independently and/or with team members.
- Ability to accept change regularly in work shift schedules and duties in order to fill for absent Custodians, building emergencies, and participation in regular staff meetings and committee work.
