The Black Studies department at CSU, Channel Islands, is an intellectual community and academic unit committed to producing and advancing the knowledge of Black people from a culturally relevant Black and African Diasporic perspective.

About the Position: 

The Black Studies Department seeks an instructor with teaching and research focus on African American or Black Studies addressing experiences of Black communities in the U.S. and committed to community engagement and collaboration to teach in the Summer Success Academy. Field of specialization open.

As a Supportive Pathways for First-Year Students program, the Summer Success Academy (SSA) at CSU Channel Islands (CSUCI) offers entering first-year students the opportunity to complete college-level coursework during the summer before their first year and promote a successful transition from high school to college.  This program provides foundational college courses, peer advising, academic advising, and social support for students just as they were about to begin their first year.  The goals are accelerating students’ time to degree, increasing academic readiness, and fostering engagement with the campus community. This program is free to participants; costs include summer courses, housing, meals, and educational field trips and activities.

The CSUCI Black Studies Department is seeking to build a pool of qualified applicants for possible part-time instruction. Applicants should have previous teaching experience. We will respond to applications based on our current needs.

Minimum Degree Requirements:

Master's in one of the disciplines included in the interdisciplinary field of Black Studies and upper-division or graduate course work

Required Qualifications:

Successful applicants will be able to demonstrate that they are broadly prepared and have a depth of knowledge in Black Studies. In addition, successful applicants will be able to demonstrate the following knowledge and abilities: 

  • Ability to work effectively and harmoniously with colleagues in an environment that promotes innovation, teaching, learning, and service to a diverse student population;
  • Demonstrated ability to implement instruction for BLST 150 “Introduction to Ethnic Studies” course and engage curriculum and pedagogy that address a variety of manifestations of systemic racism, anti-racism, or the experiences of Black communities in the U.S.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain subject matter currency;
  • Willingness to explore new technologies and teaching practices that would benefit students 

Applicants should demonstrate the commitment to effectively work with and engage a diverse student population and evidence of how they would successfully mentor minoritized students with special focus on Latinx, Black/African American, American Indian, and Asian/Asian American/Pacific Islander students.

  • Ability to participate in required professional development activities that result in improved pedagogy leading to student success. 
We are looking for a scholar who is dedicated to anti-racism, equity, and creating systemic change for our campus and our region; someone committed to community engagement and dedicated to a spirit of collaboration.
 
Responsibilities:

Under administrative leadership, it is the responsibility of the part-time college instructor to teach classes, and to participate in processes that will result in continuous improvement of instruction and programs, student success and completion, and advancement of the vision, mission, and values of CSUCI.

Implement sections of BLST 150 “Introduction to Ethnic Studies” as assigned from July 7, to August 8, 2025.

Participate in faculty training session on June 18, 2025, from 9:00 am – 2:00 p.m.

Attend other meetings as required during the session by the Program Director. Provide regular updates and check ins to Program Director. Check in with the Program Director about any student concerns.

Manage a classroom of 17-25 students.

Provide mentorship to program participants.

During the first week of class, develop and distribute a syllabus for each course to communicate to students the course description, objectives, grading, testing, attendance, and other requirements, in accordance with CSUCI guidelines on syllabus content.

Provide regular, timely feedback to students; return all graded work in a timely fashion.

Assign final grades for courses assigned during summer session in a timely manner.

Submit requisitions for textbooks and instructional materials in a timely manner.

Refer students to tutoring and related student services when appropriate.

Compensation: 

California State University Instructional Faculty, Summer Session - State Support 

$1,101-$ 6,084  (Per unit) 

Placement into a range is based on qualifications and experience.
