THE DEPARTMENT:

Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S), a department in the Division of Administrative Affairs, is responsible for planning, implementing, and administering the campus Environmental Health and Safety Programs and for providing technical consultation, training, and inspection to ultimately ensure compliance with established laws and maintain a safe place to work, study, and play for faculty, staff, students, and visitors.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Hazardous Chemical Barcoding and Inventory Management

  • Manually scan and inventory individually barcoded hazardous chemical containers throughout campus and enter newly acquired materials into the chemical inventory management system to ensure the campus hazardous chemical inventory is accurate.
  • Work with service provider to ensure the chemical inventory management system is always operational and provides users with easy and quick access to prepopulated chemical and safety information.
  • Provide staff and other local regulatory agencies with chemical inventories when requested.
  • Develop standard operating procedures and provide training to users on the chemical inventory management system.
  • Devise other innovative solutions for improving chemical inventory management processes.

Other Environmental Health & Safety Coordination

  • Perform inspections of tools, fall protection, ladders, and other safety equipment.
  • Perform inspections and maintain records of emergency equipment, including but not limited to fire extinguishers, safety eyewash and showers, automated external defibrillators (AED), and evacuation chairs.
  • Conduct periodic inspections of labs, shops, and other areas on campus to ensure safe practices are being met.
  • Assist with various safety programs and training, including but not limited to hazard communication, laboratory safety, fire and life safety, fall protection, confined spaces, environmental health, and environmental compliance.
  • Inspect and collect hazardous waste from laboratories and other campus locations, ensure appropriate labeling, and transport to the hazardous waste storage facility. Consolidate hazardous waste based on characteristics and compatibility.
  • Respond to hazardous chemical spills, manage the spill, and decontaminate the affected area(s). Maintain HAZWOPER training and other pertinent certifications and perform emergency response functions as necessary.
  • Assist other EHS staff and program areas as needed to ensure compliance and provide necessary health and safety services to the campus community.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree and/or the equivalent training and administrative work experience involving study, analysis, and/or evaluation leading to the development or improvement of administrative policies, procedures, practices, or programs.
  • Two (2) years of related experience
  • Working knowledge of, and ability to apply standard theories, principles, practices, and techniques applicable to the program and/or administrative specialty to develop conclusions and make recommendations; thorough knowledge of policies, procedures, and outside regulations pertaining to the applicable program and/or administrative specialty; working knowledge of operational and fiscal analysis and techniques; ability to take initiative and plan, organize, coordinate, and perform work in various situations where numerous and diverse demands are involved. Skill in research, development and evaluation of policies and programs, including skill in the collection, evaluation, and interpretation of data to develop sound conclusions and make appropriate recommendations; expertise in investigating and analyzing problems with a broad administrative impact and implications; ability to anticipate problems and address them proactively; demonstrated ability to effectively interpret, organize, and present information and ideas in written or presentation form; ability to train others on new skills and procedures and provide lead work direction.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to recognize unsafe/non-compliant working conditions in occupational settings and recommend appropriate safety controls.
  • Ability to interpret Environmental Health and Safety laws, regulations, and policies (federal, state, local, and university) necessary to conduct and administrate health and safety programs and maintain compliance.
  • Experience or knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations governing hazardous materials and hazardous waste including use, storage, associated hazards of materials, safe handling procedures, and appropriate personal protective equipment. Ability to develop materials for training, conduct training, and present safety information to faculty, staff, and students in areas of hazard communication, hazardous waste management, safety inspections, and other complex subjects.

CSU Classification Salary Range

This position is part of the California State University Employees Union (CSUEU) bargaining unit - 9. The CSU Classification Standards for this position are located on the following site: https://www.calstate.edu/csu-system/careers/compensation/Pages/Classification-Standards.aspx. The CSU Salary Schedule is located on the following site: https://www.calstate.edu/csu-system/careers/compensation/Pages/salary-schedule-documents.aspx. The classification salary range for this position according to the respective skill level is: minimum $4,598 and maximum $8,318 per month. Please refer to the anticipated hiring range for the appropriate salary rate for this particular position.
