The College of Science at Cal Poly Pomona invites applications for the full-time management position of Associate Dean for Academics and Research (MPP III).

The mission of the College of Science at Cal Poly Pomona is to educate, mentor, and inspire students through scientific inquiry and hands-on learning. It offers 15 undergraduate degree programs and six Master’s degrees across seven academic departments, including Biological Sciences, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Computer Science, Geological Sciences, Kinesiology & Health Promotion, Mathematics & Statistics, and Physics & Astronomy. The College houses the Center for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching (CEMaST), which supports K-16 education locally and nationally to increase STEM success and participation for all. Our students, regardless of race, sex, color, ethnicity or national origin, are also supported by programs like Science Educational Enhancement Services (SEES), Black Achievement Success & Engagement in Science Scholars (BASES), and Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE). These programs are designed to support the academic success of all students in STEM. The College of Science has approximately 150 full-time faculty, 40 staff, and 4,500 active majors. The Position

The College of Science Associate Dean for Academics and Research works with the Dean on responsibilities that include curriculum management and development; degree program development, assessment, reporting, and review; faculty recruitment, evaluation, and development; and grant development and management. The Associate Dean reports to and works closely with the Dean and staff to carry out these responsibilities and supports the College's commitment to educate, mentor, and inspire students through scientific inquiry and hands-on learning.

  • Faculty Recruitment, Evaluation, and Development: Assist the Dean with the faculty recruitment process; manage faculty professional development activities; assist the Dean with Retention, Tenure, and Promotion criteria and evaluation; manage the lecturer evaluation process; liaise with Faculty Affairs and provide guidance to departments on evaluation documents and compliance with Collective Bargaining Agreements in Units 3 and 11.
  • Research Proposal Development and Grant Management: Work with the Dean and the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP) to help faculty develop grant proposals and contracts; foster collaborative grant activities; work with budget analyst to help faculty manage grants; serve as liaison with industrial collaborators and the California State University (CSU) research consortia, e.g., Agricultural Research Institute (ARI), Council on Ocean Affairs, Science & Technology (COAST), CSU Biotechnology (CSU BIOTECH), Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics Network (STEM-NET).
  • Technical Staff: As HEERA manager for technical staff (~ 17 IST/ETs) that serve teaching and research laboratories, maintain position descriptions; hire staff; conduct annual evaluations; manage staff development; oversee absence management reporting; and liaise with HR on issues. The Director of Academic Affairs Business Operations will assist with these duties.
  • Curriculum and Program Management: Assist departments with curriculum development, program assessment, accreditation, and reporting needs; coordinate catalog revisions; facilitate technology-based curricular initiatives; serve as an ex-officio member of the College Curriculum and Assessment Committees and as a liaison with Academic Programs.
  • Budget and Finance: Work with the Dean’s leadership team to help develop and manage the state-side, foundation, and philanthropic budget allocation. Oversee financial processes such as faculty start-up spending and grant-related payroll. Track faculty-assigned time and lecturer/TA appointments for reporting and budget management.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate from an accredited institution in a field appropriate to one of the departments in the College of Science.
  • Must have achieved tenure or have a record to support tenure based on effective teaching, scholarship, and service that merits appointment at the full professor level in the College of Science.
  • Two or more years of successful administrative experience related to the duties and responsibilities of this position.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of academic regulations, processes, and policies.
  • Demonstrated management, problem-solving, and personal interaction skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a budget.
  • Demonstrated experience in and/or commitment to supporting a diverse, multicultural community.

 

Preferred Skills and Attributes

  • Academic department chair experience within the CSU.
  • Professional experience and research, publications and/or grantsmanship in one of the disciplines represented by the College of Science.
  • Demonstrated commitment to educational excellence and student success.

Employment Requirements

Positions that require driving for university business by using a personal or state vehicle must comply with the Authorized University Driver Policy. Driving records are monitored and evaluated by the Risk Management Department. The Risk

Management Department evaluates a good driving report based on the following criteria. The driver must: 1. Have a valid California or other State Driver’s license. 2. Have no more than 3 motor vehicle violations or been the cause of 3 accidents in a
