THE DEPARTMENT:

The Office of Student Success oversees the coordination of academic advising and academic support initiatives to achieve shared goals, and the development and implementation of programs to help students make timely progress toward degree completion. Student Success provides oversight related to policies, university advising, academic-related initiatives, and strategic planning. Student Success provides oversight for Advising Technology; the Bronco Advising Center; Bronco Navigators; Bronco Scholars; College Access & Transitions; CSU ASAP; Early Alerts; First Year Experience; Graduation Pledge Programs; I Am First; Learning Resource Center; PolyTransfer; Reading, Advising, and Mentoring Program (RAMP); Student Success Communication; Testing Services; Undeclared Advising; and University Advising. Student Success collaborates with Academic Programs, Enrollment Management & Services, and college leadership to support students in meeting their academic goals. Cal Poly Pomona defines student success through an integrated polytechnic model that embraces a holistic view of student learning, engagement and growth; a paradigm that recognizes the student experience and opportunities for learning occur both in and out of the classroom. In accordance with California Education Code § 89297.1(a)(1), the California State University established the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Student Achievement Program (CSU ASAP) to enhance educational experiences and promote success for AANHPI students. Cal Poly Pomona received five years of state funding through this program to support initiatives that advance the achievement and well-being of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander students. The grant allocates funding to implement high-impact practices, culturally responsive programming, and data-informed strategies that promote equity, inclusion, and student success. Supported by this initiative, the Office of Student Success (OSS) collaborates with campus and community partners, including Student Affairs, the Asian & Pacific Islander Student Center (APISC), Ethnic and Women’s Studies, and Outreach, Recruitment & Educational Partnerships (OREP), to enhance institutional support for AANHPI students and strengthen pathways for their success.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Program Leadership & Oversight:

  • Provide administrative and strategic leadership for CSU ASAP program initiatives.
  • Develop, implement, and lead program objectives, timelines, and deliverables in alignment with California Education Code §89297.1.
  • Support in leading grant-funded professional staff (e.g., Educational Access & Engagement SSP II) and student assistants.
  • Lead budget planning, reporting, and assessment efforts; ensure compliance with CSU grant management policies.
  • Oversee campus wide coalition meetings regarding all departments and divisions associated with the CSU grant.

Program and Partnership Development:

  • Oversee culturally responsive student support initiatives including mentorship, PolyTransfer Advantage Arise Academy, and Pasifika pre-college engagement, and other activities outlines in the program objectives.
  • Partner with APISC, MSI, Ethnic & Women’s Studies, and OREP to integrate academic and co-curricular programming.
  • Coordinate pipeline programs (summer residential, immersive campus visits, outreach to NHPI and Southeast Asian students).
  • Cultivate partnerships with K–12 schools, community colleges, and community-based organizations serving AANHPI populations.
  • Attend, support and provide leadership to all CSU ASAP programs and events.

Student Retenetion & Support:

  • Provide coaching/advising and support to AANHPI students, particularly those who are first-generation or low-income, addressing barriers to persistence and graduation.  
  • Connect students to academic advising, success coaching, financial aid, basic needs resources, and career development opportunities.  
  • Use assessment data to identify equity gaps and direct program interventions.

Assessment, Reporting & Compliance:

  • Design and implement evaluation tools to measure program outcomes and student success metrics.
  • Prepare annual and mid-cycle reports/data for CSU ASAP, CPP leadership, and external stakeholders.
  • Track program participation, retention, and graduation rates disaggregated by race/ethnicity.
  • Develop logic models and assessment plans to support continuous improvement.

Campus & Community Engagement: 

  • Represent CPP at statewide CSU ASAP convenings, including AMLA, APAHE, and the biannual ASAP Symposium
  • Serve as a liaison between Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and community partners on AANHPI student success initiatives.
  • Contribute to professional development for faculty and staff on equity-minded practices that support AANHPI students.
  • Contribute and support OSS and AES programs, services and initiatives. Be part of the AES leadership team. Participate in meetings, committees and regional collaboratives as appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Combination - Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related.
  • DL NUMBER - Driver License, Valid and in State
  • Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent to four years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience which includes experience in advising students individually and in groups, and in analysis and resolution of complex student services problems.
  • The following knowledge and abilities as well as those listed at lower levels in the Student Services Professional series are required for appointment to this classification. Thorough knowledge of the policies, procedures and practices of the program area to which assigned or the ability to quickly acquire such knowledge. General knowledge of the policies, practices and activities of Student Services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned; general knowledge of the principles, problems and methods of public administration, including organizational, personnel and fiscal management; general knowledge of advanced statistical and research methods. Ability to carry out very complex assignments without detailed instructions; advise students individually or in groups on varied and complex matters; determine the appropriate course of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals and groups in personal interactions of a sensitive nature; reason logically and analyze and solve organizational and operating problems of one or several program areas; plan, coordinate and initiate actions necessary to implement administrative or group decisions or recommendations; analyze and define complex organizational, policy or procedural problems, collect and evaluate data, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action; understand the roles and responsibilities of others and to gauge relationships accordingly by taking into account the variety of the interrelationships, motivations and goals of the members of the organization served; and establish and maintain effective, cooperative and harmonious working relationships in circumstances which involve the denial of requests or the necessity to persuade others to accept a different point of view. Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the Experience requirements below.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in Higher Education, Counseling, Social Work, Ethnic Studies, or related field
  • Experience leading grant-funded programs, including fiscal management, compliance, and reporting.
  • Knowledge of AANHPI student experiences, with emphasis on Southeast Asian, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander populations.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster institutional partnerships and community collaborations
  • Experience in program management and coordinating large scale programs and services.

Background Check

Education Code 89521 Requirements

Applicants will be required to disclose whether they have received a final administrative decision or final judicial decision determining that they have committed sexual harassment within the last 7 years only after a determination is made that they meet the minimum qualifications for the position, and before an offer of employment is extended. CSU Classification Salary Range

This position is part of the APC bargaining unit 4. The CSU Classification Standards for this position are located on the CSU Classification Standards website.The CSU Salary Schedule is located on the CSU Salary Schedule website. The classification salary range for this position according to the respective skill level is: minimum $6,320 and maximum $9,014 per month. Please refer to the anticipated hiring range for the appropriate salary rate for this particular position.

University Driving Requirement

Positions that require driving for university business by using a personal or state vehicle must comply with the Authorized University Driver Policy. Driving records are monitored and evaluated by the Risk Management Department. The Risk Management Department evaluates a good driving report based on the following criteria. The driver must: 1. Have a valid California or other State Driver’s license. 2. Have no more than 3 motor vehicle violations or been the cause of 3 accidents in a 12-month period (or any combination of 3 thereof) 3. Not have more than 3 DMV Points, if their license is Class C or, 4. Not have more than 5 DMV Points, if their license is Class A, B, or C with endorsements.
