California State Polytechnic University, Pomona invites applications for a tenure track faculty position in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Cal Poly Pomona is one of three polytechnic universities in the 22-campus California State University system and among 12 such institutions nationwide. Student Population. Cal Poly Pomona is the number one polytechnic university in the nation for student diversity and economic mobility. College of Science:

The College’s mission is to educate, mentor, and inspire students through scientific inquiry and hands-on learning. It offers 15 undergraduate degree programs and six Master’s degrees across seven academic departments that include: Biological Sciences, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Computer Science, Geological Sciences, Kinesiology & Health Promotion, Mathematics & Statistics, and Physics & Astronomy. Our Center for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching (CEMaST) supports K-16 education locally and nationally to increase STEM success and participation for all. The College of Science has approximately 150 full-time faculty, 40 staff, and 4,400 active majors. Our commitment to the teacher-scholar model results in our college being the largest recipient of extramural grant funding on campus. Department of Mathematics and Statistics:

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics has over 30 full-time faculty and offers a bachelor’s degree in mathematics with two options: pure mathematics/secondary teaching and applied mathematics/statistics. We also offer a master’s program with two degrees: one degree with emphases in mathematics education and pure mathematics; and a second degree with options in applied mathematics and statistics. The department currently has approximately 350 undergraduate major students and 50 graduate students, and serves over 5,000 students each semester.

Cal Poly Pomona has a student body with broad socio-economic and cultural backgrounds, and the department is looking for faculty who can thrive and contribute meaningfully in this environment. Our majors reflect the overall university student population, with over 50% from underrepresented groups, as well as approximately 40% first generation college students. We value faculty who can inspire students through their teaching and through mentorship in research.

Position description:

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is seeking applicants for an Assistant Professor with expertise in applied mathematics with a preference for those who specialize in nonlinear optimization, the mathematics of machine learning, or stochastic modeling. The faculty member in this position will teach mathematics and/or statistics courses at the undergraduate and graduate level. It is expected that the new faculty member will engage in scholarly research or grant activity and serve on department, college, and university committees. They also will have the chance to mentor undergraduate research and graduate student master’s thesis projects.

Minimum requirements include:

  • A Ph.D. in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related field (degree must be conferred by the start date of the position)
  • University or college teaching experience (e.g., instructor of record, teaching assistant, or similar role) in mathematics
  • Evidence of ongoing or potential scholarly research in applied mathematics or a closely related area
  • Demonstrated potential to teach upper-division undergraduate and graduate-level applied mathematics courses

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:

  • Research expertise in applied mathematics, with particular interest in nonlinear optimization, the mathematics of machine learning, or stochastic modeling
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching
  • Potential for directing Master’s thesis students or mentoring undergraduate research
  • Potential for contributing to department governance and service
  • Evidence of commitment to mentoring first generation college students in the mathematical community

  • teaching philosophy statement (2-page max) that addresses Cal Poly Pomona’s commitment to excellence in education;

  • at least two letters of reference, at least one of which must specifically address teaching;
  • the names and contact information for at least three individuals that can serve as references;
  • unofficial transcripts (undergraduate and graduate, official transcripts will be required of finalists).

Finalists for the position will:

  • provide official transcripts for highest degree before the on-campus interview;
  • provide three letters of reference dated within the last two years;
  • make a presentation of scholarly work and a teaching demonstration to faculty and interact with students.

Education Code 89521 Requirements:
