THE DEPARTMENT

The Center for Community Engagement (CCE) is part of the Office of Academic Innovation within the Division of Academic Affairs, coordinating four signature polytechnic experiences (PolyX):

  • Service Learning and Community Engaged-Learning Courses
  • Bronco Stampede of Service (Civic Engagement & Volunteer Service)
  • Cooperative Education (Co-Op)
  • Academic Internships
  • Community Innovation Hub (in City of Pomona)

The CCE advances the educational mission of Cal Poly Pomona to cultivate student success "through a diverse culture of experiential learning, discovery, and innovation" by curating opportunities for students to Learn By Doing Good through engagement in experiential learning, discovery, and innovation. Specifically, the CCE's mission is to enhance learning, encourage career exploration, inspire civic engagement, and empower students with meaningful community-engaged learning experiences that have a positive impact on our local community, region, and world. The CCE provides the university and community with a broad range of resources and support, including class and community presentations, training workshops, conferences, one-on-one assistance, mini grants, and a resource library.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide strategic direction, tactical leadership, coordination, and administrative oversight to processes and operations of the CCE:

  • Provide a compelling vision and strategic direction for community-based learning and research that are aligned with CPP's strategic and academic master plans
  • Develop and implement a program evaluation and assessment plan to ensure the CCE is achieving student learning outcomes
  • Communicate the vision for the CCE to internal and external stakeholders (local, national and international)
  • Ensures community engagement and partnership strategies are aligned with the university mission and department goals
  • Monitors and aligns the CCE budget, policies, practices and structures to the vision, mission, and strategic plan of the center; and
  • Maintains a faculty and community advisory board in support of the strategic goals of the CCE and the university.

Lead Work Direction:

  • Serves as lead to a highly-skilled staff that coordinates a variety of levels of support for faculty, students, and community partners
  • Oversees Academic Service-Learning, Academic Internship, Academic Cooperative Education, Bronco Volunteer Programs, College Corp Program, and the Community Innovation Hub in Pomona;
  • Resolves problems or issues with programs, including those of a sensitive and complex nature, by considering elements both within and outside the incumbent's program areas and consulting others as necessary.

Collaboration

  • Collaborates and coordinates with all the units in the Office of Academic Innovation (Al) including developing and nurturing synergistic partnerships that advance the goals of the office and the respective units;
  • Maintains an on-going relationship with CPP's nine colleges and other appropriate units on campus that leads to greater campus-wide participation in community-based learning and scholarship;
  • Collaborates closely with the CSU Chancellor's Office Center for Community Engagement, submits annual statement of intent for California's Call to Service Initiative, submits year-end reports, and participates in system wide CCE leadership meetings, retreats and conferences;
  • Works with community partners to develop long-term and reciprocal partnerships and connect community interests to faculty expertise and student learning in a broad range of disciplines;
  • Collaborates with CPP Foundation and the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs to manage CCE programs, grants and contracts;
  • Collaborates with Student Affairs to jointly present programs that promote student leadership in the areas of volunteerism, and civic engagement;
  • Collaborates and coordinates with the CSU Chancellor's Office Community Engagement Department and other CSU campuses;
  • Maintains relationships with on-campus, CSU, and national organizations to promote awareness of community-based learning and civic engagement and the CCE; and
  • Serves on committees as requested .

Overseeing Resources:

  • Oversees resources and budgets for the CCE and programs offered through the CCE including CSU Chancellor's Office budgets, College Corps Grants, grants supporting the Community Innovation Hub, and Cooperative Education grants;
  • Knows and is proficient in CPP Foundation's KRONOS platform for cooperative education human resource functions including recruiting, selection, time keeping and payroll;
  • Oversees the campus-wide implementation of BroncoSERV (Cal Poly Pomona's portion of the California State University's new S-4 community engagement database project); and
  • Identifies and pursues public and private sources of funding to support community- based learning and research and the advancement of community-university partnerships.
  • Planning, Research and Reporting:
  • Participates in strategic planning, goal setting, benchmarking and program assessment for the CCE and for Al;
  • Develops and implements an assessment plan for the CCE with relevant learning outcomes and makes the results publicly available and accessible;
  • Compiles and submits annual reports to the Office of Academic Innovation, Provost's office, CSU Chancellor's Office Center for Community Engagement and other external agencies;
  • Serves as Principal Investigator on CCE and Cooperative Education grants and contracts; and
  • Analyzes changes or proposed changes in law and policies related to the responsibilities of the CCE, makes comparative analyses of relevant laws and policies, and informs and advises the AVP Al on the impact of such changes.

Marketina and Publicitv:

  • Develops and executes a marketing plan to communicate the goals and showcase the accomplishments of the CCE to internal and external stakeholders;
  • Disseminates the CCE annual report including CCE impact data and makes publicly available and accessible;
  • Oversees communications related to the CCE including social media marketing; and
  • Maintains an effective, easy to use and accessible website for the CCE.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Four years of progressively responsible administrative, technical, or professional analytical experience which demonstrates ability to conduct substantive surveys and studies of problems and issues in assigned areas.

OR

  • The rank of Associate Professor or higher in a four-year college or university and demonstrated experience in research or special study work may be substituted for the four years of experience.
  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university.

 

General knowledge of administrative survey principles and techniques and skill in their application; general knowledge of principles of organization and management; thorough knowledge of the subject area of the assignment; working knowledge of statistical methods. Ability to relate the overall objectives and policies of the Trustees, the Office of the Chancellor and the administration and faculties of the campus to analytical and research studies; ability to see the interrelationships within and among the various educational, administrative and fiscal programs on the campuses; sensitivity to the special needs of various campuses because of different size, location, characteristics and circumstances; ability to approach problems objectively; ability to present findings and recommendations clearly and diplomatically and to reconcile, to the extent possible, various divergent points of view; ability to utilize complex statistical and other types of research methods; ability to draw conclusions and develop recommendations, to prepare written reports, and to develop and level contacts including the leading of meetings and negotiations.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • A master's degree in educational leadership or administration or relevant field
  • Experience managing a complex organizational unit in a university or similar organization
  • Experience working with community­based organizations; a large external community-based network
  • Experience working with the CSU Chancellor's Office
  • Thorough knowledge of community-based teaching, learning and scholarship; general knowledge of administrative and management principles and techniques and skill in their application; and general knowledge of principles of organization and management including conflict management and the management of change.
  • Ability to advance a vision of high quality community-based teaching, learning and scholarship that will result in greater campus-wide participation in community-based learning and scholarship.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills including the ability to prepare written reports, present findings and recommendations clearly and lead meetings.
  • Strong analytical skills including the ability to draw conclusions and develop recommendations utilizing evidence-based decision-making.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to negotiate with community and industry partners, reconcile, to the extent possible, various divergent points of view, and resolve conflict. Ability to develop others and create and maintain a supportive work environment that fosters collaboration and teamwork.
  • Ability to effectively manage and administer the center's budget and grants.

The classification salary range for this position according to the respective skill level is minimum $5,983 and maximum $10,824 per month.
