Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm


THE DEPARTMENT:

The Bronco Advising Center (BAC) provides timely and integrated informational, transactional, and general academic services for students and the campus community through walk-in, email, virtual, and phone service requests. The BAC provides general advising on general education requirements, university polices, and semester conversion. It also houses the Undeclared Advising, Graduation Pledge and Student Success Ambassador programs. The BAC offers services related to academic advising, registration, financial aid and scholarships; outreach; admissions; the Early Start Program; and student accounting to assist students in achieving their academic goals and completing processes related to their university enrollment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Student Advising Provide timely, focused advising to all students to ensure that they stay on track to graduation and are able to successfully navigate university policies and procedures to meet their academic and career goals. In advising students, utilize a combination of high level analytical and interpersonal skills, as well as independent judgment, when developing effective and creative solutions to student problems. Work with students (and parents, when appropriate) using strong communication skills to explain complex university policies, identify student needs, and provide direction in helping students obtain resources and navigate challenges. Collaborate with a broad range of institutional partners that include associate deans, department chairs, faculty and staff, Office of Student Success, Bronco Advising Center, University Advising, Registrar's Office, and supplemental advising programs (e.g., Athletics, Kellogg Honors College, CPP Pledge) to provide support to students, as well as provide appropriate referral to university resources (e.g., CAPS, DRC, Veteran's center). Use e-advising tools including Planner, Degree Progress Report, Schedule Builder, CPP Connect, and semester conversion tools to advise students and educate them on academic planning. Interpret and apply policies and procedures to provide students and families with appropriate guidance, information and transactional and referral services related to the academic and enrollment services offices. Accurately assess the needs and concerns of the students and other visitors and provide timely and efficient service. Provide step-by step instructions to empower students to better utilize online self-service in navigating polies and processes of the university. Provide accurate, timely, and effective referrals to academic advisors within the Bronco Advising Center and/or Colleges as well as specialist staff in enrollment offices and other key campus departments, which will require maintaining cooperative working relationships with faculty, staff, and others. Follow up to ensure that the students' needs were met. Attend and participate in professional development training offered by the university and professional organizations. Maintain current knowledge of academic, admission, and registration policies and procedures. Utilize a holistic and integrated approach
  • Student Academic Coaching and Support Provide academic student success coaching to undergraduate students. Build relationships with these students to proactively work to improve student experience and academic success. Build trusting relationships with a diverse student population by delivering personalized, constructive, engaging, motivating, and informative academic student success coaching sessions. Provide timely and holistic support students who need support with academic success plans (students in academic difficulty or students who are repeating courses). Advise students on the repeat course policy and petition process. Collaborate with the Learning Resource Center, the Early Support Team, and other campus partners to provide workshops and necessary support. Help students develop a plan to achieve their academic and career goals by assessing on values/goals, needs and obstacles. Maintain accurate student information in CPP Connect. Using CPP Connect, contact and schedule academic student success coaching sessions with students, as needed. Manage confidential information and provide accurate, direct feedback to management to foster continuous improvement of the student experience Project, assess and report on student likelihood to retain. Progress through academic student success coaching training program at expected pace in order to grow and learn as a coaching professional. Attend regular project team meetings. Contribute as both an individual student success coach and a team member in order to further the university’s mission.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree - Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job‑related field.
  • DL NUMBER - Driver License, Valid and in State
  • At least two years of progressively responsible work experience in academic advising, teaching, or student services and
  • A master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional work experience.
  • Knowledge of critical issues impacting higher education, deep commitment to educational equity and student success, and skill in working effectively with multiple and diverse constituencies to create and sustain positive learning experiences for students. Excellent interpersonal, public speaking, and written communication skills. Strong organizational skills, high level of energy and flexibility, and the ability to handle multiple assignments, manage time effectively, and work independently and as part of a coordinated team. Computer literacy in Windows and Microsoft Office


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in academic advising, teaching, and/or counseling; experience working with low-income and diverse student populations; proficiency in PeopleSoft, and Microsoft applications.
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks at once while remaining composed
  • Ability to retain and utilize large amounts of detailed information and quickly access and utilize additional information in the moment
  • Strong verbal & written communication skills including phone and in-person, emails, texts, etc. Technology savvy
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, meet deadlines, handle and prioritize simultaneous requests
  • Self-starter who advocates for him/herself
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • Creative and analytical thinker with strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to interact and maintain good working relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment 
  • Ability to cultivate strong interpersonal customer and co-worker relationships and work effectively cross functionally
  • Ability to read and interpret complex information, talk with customers and listen attentively
  • Must protect the confidentiality of student personal information and comply with Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

Education Code 89521 Requirements

CSU Classification Salary Range

This position is part of the APC bargaining unit 4. The CSU Classification Standards for this position are located on the CSU Classification Standards website.The CSU Salary Schedule is located on the CSU Salary Schedule website. The classification salary range for this position according to the respective skill level is: minimum $5,083 and maximum $7,228 per month. Please refer to the anticipated hiring range for the appropriate salary rate for this particular position.

University Driving Requirement

Positions that require driving for university business by using a personal or state vehicle must comply with the Authorized University Driver Policy. Driving records are monitored and evaluated by the Risk Management Department. The Risk Management Department evaluates a good driving report based on the following criteria. The driver must: 1. Have a valid California or other State Driver’s license. 2. Have no more than 3 motor vehicle violations or been the cause of 3 accidents in a 12-month period (or any combination of 3 thereof) 3. Not have more than 3 DMV Points, if their license is Class C or, 4. Not have more than 5 DMV Points, if their license is Class A, B, or C with endorsements.
